Bad Words

Kate announced at dinner last night to me and the boys, that Gabriella told her there was the "F" word in some song--that it was a bad word, so she couldn't listen to that version of it.  Oh no.  I have to say, one of the perks of homeschooling was that Kate wasn't subjected to a lot of gross language.  "What's the 'F' word, Mom?"  Here we go, I thought.  The wheels were burning rubber in my head.  "It's not a nice word, honey.  We can talk about it when I tuck you in tonight."  The last thing I needed was to have 2 little boys hearing us discuss swear words.
Joe called while I was getting everyone bathed and I mentioned the conversation.  We agreed I should go ahead and tell Kate the swear words so she'd know what they are,
and know that we don't ever use them.
I tucked her in bed, read her a story, and then began to explain swearing.  She got a funny look on her face and said, "I've never heard those before, Mom!  People who talk like that are stupid!"  Premature exposure?  Possibly.  Great.  Now that's all she's gonna think about!
Then our conversation ended on the best note ever, which eased my mind.  It went like this:

Kate: "Then why would singers put bad words in their songs?"
Me:  "Because they can't think of better words to use--they aren't very smart.  That's why, when you are listening to songs on iTunes, if it says, "clean" or "explicit", you always choose the "clean" song.
Kate:  "Oh ya!  Because the "clean" version is in white-- like an angel--like what Heavenly Father wants us to be like.  And the "explicit" is red, like Satan.  We don't want to be like him."

Thank you iTunes for making it so clear.  I love you Kate.

I love that you share these stories. It makes me think about how I will handle these types of situations when the time comes. It's given me some great ideas!

Sadly to say, a girl taught isaiah the f word 2 weeks again during lunch. I was sad and cried that night. Hard to think what this world our children are living in.
